How to tune a kalimba
Each tine is a steel prong. Its pitch depends on the vibrating length — the part sticking out past the bridge.
- Too flat (♭, blue)? Tap the tine IN toward the body with a tuning hammer to shorten it → pitch goes up ▲.
- Too sharp (♯, orange)? Tap the tine OUT away from the body to lengthen it → pitch goes down ▼.
- Move in tiny taps (≈0.5 mm). Re-pluck and re-check after every tap.
- Tune in a quiet room — the mic also hears talking and fans.
Standard layout: the longest/lowest tine sits in the center, and notes alternate right-then-left going outward, ascending the scale.
